Anchorage — The Alaska Prep Shootout delivered plenty of drama during Thursday’s first round at Dimond High.

Juneau, Bartlett and Palmer all survived close calls to claim semifinal spots in the eight-team boys basketball tournament.

Juneau outlasted defending state champion Dimond 62-59. Bartlett eked out a 51-50 overtime win over Soldotna and Palmer withstood a late rally by Grace Christian 52-49.

Chugiak posted the day’s only double-digit victory, disposing of Ketchikan 62-47.

Palmer 52, Grace 49

Connor Looney of Palmer and Hans Karlberg of Grace Christian turned the Shootout into a real shootout, with Karlberg winning the scoring duel but Looney’s team winning the game.

Looney poured in 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Palmer past the Grizzlies 53-49. Karlsberg finished with 30 points.

After the teams battled to a 12-12 tie after one quarter, Palmer seemingly took command in the second quarter by outscoring the Grizzlies 19-2 for a 31-14 halftime lead. But Grace Christian made things close at the end with a 23-8 fourth quarter.

Kyle Markel contributed 10 rebounds for Grace, while Brian Selmer’s 11-point, 11-rebound game helped the Moose take a 40-27 rebounding edge.

Juneau 62, Dimond 59

Juneau outshot and outrebounded defending state champion Dimond in a narrow 62-59 win.

The Crimson Bears hit 54.6 percent of their shots from the field, an effort led by Aquino Brinson’s 7 of 9 effort. Brinson netted a team-high 15 points. Keith Ainsworth added 14 and Jackson Lehnhart 10.

Dimond managed to connect on 38.8 percent of its shots and lost the battle on the boards 33-26.

Damon Cikanek poured in 23 points for the Lynx, who trailed 42-31 going into the final quarter.

Bartlett 51, Soldotna 50 OT

Bartlett’s 51-50 overtime win over Soldotna included 11 lead changes and a double-double from Iziah Sherman-Newsome. 

Sherman-Newsome led Bartlett with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and B.J. McKoy hit 6 of 7 field-goal attempts on his way to 12 points. Bradley Johnson flirted with a double-double for the Golden Bears, recording eight points and nine rebounds.

Bartlett led by five at halftime, but Soldotna battled back to tie it at 45-45 at the end of regulation. 

Soldotna’s Cory Carver led all scorers with 22 points and added four steals. Colton Young notched 10 points and a team-high three assists for the Stars. 

Chugiak 62, Ketchikan 47

Skyler Fullmer’s 25 points and 12 rebounds powered Chugiak’s win and Payton Fullmer hit three 3-pointers to finish with 17 points in Chugiak’s 62-47 win over Ketchikan. 

Chugiak, which also got 13 points from Roger Jorgensen, led 16-9 after one quarter and outscored Ketchikan in each quarter. 

Ketchikan’s Malik Almenzor bagged 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting and tossed in a game-high four steals.

  GIRLS BASKETBALL

Wasilla 75, West 50

Kyla Dinkel and Alisha Devine each came within one rebound of a double-double in Wasilla’s 75-50 girls basketball win over West in a nonconference game Thursday in Wasilla.

Dinkel finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, Devine with 17 points and nine rebounds. Alexis Imoe chipped in a game-high 21 points.

The Warriors raced to a 20-4 lead in the first quarter and were never threatened by a West team that committed 32 turnovers.

Marshala Eady and CeCe Cockerham each scored 10 points for West, with Cockerham adding a team-high seven rebounds.
