Shaun White (Carlsbad, Calif.) clinched his sixth consecutive X Games superpipe title on Jan. 27 in Aspen, Colo. White's first- run score of 95.00 was good enough for gold, but the eight-time superpipe champion upped his score to 98.00 on his second run to win the title. On the women's side, the U.S. swept the podium led by five-time X Games champion Kelly Clark (West Dover, Vt.). Clark's third-run score of 90.33 was enough to overtake Elena Hight's (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) score of 90.00, while Arielle Gold (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) captured bronze.
OWNING THE OVAL
On the final day of competition, Heather Richardson (High Point, N.C.) clinched the World Sprint Championships title after winning the 1,000-meter race on Jan. 27 in Kerns, Utah. That gold in the final individual event, coupled with a pair of bronze medals a day earlier in the 500 and 1,000, helped her become the first American woman to win the World Sprint Championships since Jennifer Rodriquez in 2005.
BIATHLON
Sean Doherty (Center Conway, N.H.) won the 2013 IBU Youth Pursuit World Championship on Jan. 27 in Obertilliach, Austria. Doherty was victorious in the 10-kilometer pursuit with a time of 29:31.0, more than 28 seconds clear of his closest competitor. Two days earlier, Doherty completed the 7.5K sprint in 21:16.0 and claimed the silver.
BOBSLED/SKELETON
The U.S. successfully defended its world championship title in the team event on Jan. 27 in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The team of John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.), Elana Meyers (Douglasville, Ga.), Lolo Jones (Des Moines, Iowa), Noelle Pikus- Pace (Orem, Utah), Steven Holcomb (Park City, Utah) and Curt Tomasevicz (Shelby, Neb.) claimed USA-1's second consecutive title with a combined time of 4:31.29. A day earlier, Meyers and Katie Eberling (Palos, Hills, Ill.) earned the silver medal in the women's two-man bobsled with a total time of 4:30.99.
The Intercontinental Cup tour concluded on Jan. 23 in Winterberg, Germany, with the U.S. posting three top-10 finishes. Kyle Tress (Ewing, N.J.) finished eighth and Mike Dellemann (Oregon, Wis.) slid to 10th in men's skeleton, while Kimber Gabryszak (Park City, Utah) placed ninth in women's skeleton.
EQUESTRIAN
Steffen Peters (San Diego, Calif.) led the U.S. at the World Dressage Masters Palm Beach, which ran from Jan. 25-26 in Wellington, Fla. Peters finished third in both the grand prix special and freestyle aboard Legolas 92.
Brianne Goutal (New York, N.Y.) outlasted the field to win the $50,000 CSI 2* Grand Prix during the third week of the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival on Jan. 27 in Wellington, Fla. Piloting Onira, Goutal road the gelding through the timers in 38.96 for the win.
FENCING
The U.S. men's foil team made history at the Paris Foil World Cup when the four-man squad won its first ever world cup team title on Jan. 27. The team of Alexander Massialas (San Francisco, Calif.), Race Imboden (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and David Willette (Lafayette, Calif.) won four matches, including a 45-33 victory over Germany in the championship.
Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) had a fifth-place finish at the London Saber World Cup on Jan. 26. Zagunis won her first three matches, but fell in her quarterfinal bout, 15-9, to Poland's Aleksandra Socha. A day later, the women's saber team finished ninth in the team competition.
FIGURE SKATING
Meryl Davis (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Charlie White (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) tied history as they became the fifth team to win five U.S. ice dancing titles on Jan. 27 in Omaha, Neb. On the men's side, Max Aaron (Scottsdale, Ariz.) posted a score of 175.87 in the free skate to help clinch his first senior U.S. title. Ross Miner (Boston, Mass.) and Jeremy Abbott (Aspen, Colo.) rounded out the men's podium. Meanwhile, Ashley Wagner (Alexandria, Va.) won the ladies competition with a score of 188.84, followed closely by Gracie Gold (Chicago, Ill.) and Agnes Zawadzki (Des Plaines, Ill.).
GYMNASTICS
Eight gymnasts qualified for the 2013 Nastia Liukin Cup through the Nastia Liukin Cup series over the weekend. Rachel Dunn (Katy, Texas), Bridget Dean (Orlando, Fla.) and Alex McMurtry (Midlothian, Va.) qualified at the Whitlow Invitational in Kissimmee, Fla. At the Wisconsin Dells Gymnastics Vacation Classic, Lexy Ramler (St. Michael, Minn.) was the lone qualifier. Alicia Boren (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Ashton Locklear (Hamlet, N.C.) punched their tickets at the Parkettes Invitational in Allentown, Pa., while Miranda Cabada (Fontana, Calif.) earned her spot at the San Diego Classic.
HOCKEY
The U.S. National Sled Team earned a 5-2 victory over Korea to clinch the inaugural USA Hockey Sled Cup title on Jan. 26 in Indian Trail, N.C. Team USA went 4-0 in the four-team tournament with wins over the U.S. development squad, Russia and Korea.
LUGE
Theresa Buckley (Allentown, Pa.) led the U.S. at the junior world cup with a gold-medal performance in the women's singles event. With a two-run total of 1:29.970, Buckley secured the third win in her junior career at the event, which ran from Jan. 24-26 in Calgary, Alberta. Meanwhile, Riley Stohr (Whitehall, Mich.) picked up a bronze medal in the men's youth division after tallying a total time of 1:29.430. In the team competition, the U.S. finished in 2:14.656 to win the bronze medal.
SKI/SNOWBOARD
David Wise (Reno, Nev.) led a U.S. sweep in the superpipe skiing event at the X Games, which ran from Jan. 24-27 in Aspen, Colo. Wise claimed gold to repeat as X Games champion with a score of 95.66, followed closely by Torin Yater-Wallace (Aspen, Colo.) and Simon Dumont (Bethel, Maine). On the women's side, Maddie Bowman (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) combined back-to-back 900s to take her first X Games gold in the superpipe. In slopestyle skiing, Nick Goepper (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) posted a 94.00 on his second run to win gold. In the women's slopestyle snowboarding competition, Jamie Anderson (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) scored a 93.00 on her first run to secure her fourth career X Games gold.
Evan Strong (Nevada City, Calif.) paced the U.S. at the IPC Alpine World Cup event on Jan. 27 in South Tahoe, Nev. Strong dominated the men's lower-limb impairment snowboard category with a time of 1:39.50, while teammate Keith Gabel (Madison, Wis.) finished third (1:41.74). Marc Deraves won the men's upper-limb impairment snowboard category with a time of 1:47.86, followed by Joseph Candler.
Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) won her 59th career FIS Alpine World Cup giant slalom event on Jan. 26 in Maribor, Slovenia. Vonn posted a total time of 2:22.20 and is now three victories shy of tying the women's all-time record. Mikaela Shiffrin (Vail, Colo.) finished eighth in the slalom to retain her overall lead in the world cup slalom points.
David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, Colo.) was the top U.S. finisher at the world cup slalom event on Jan. 27 in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Chodounsky clocked a total time of 1:47.28 to finish 21st.
Eliza Ottrim (Hamden, Conn.) secured her first FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup podium of the season on Jan. 26 in Calgary, Alberta. Her score of 21.42 earned her a third-place finish, while teammate Hannah Kearney (Norwich, Vt.) finished fifth.
Bryan Fletcher (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) led the U.S. at the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup, which ran from Jan. 26-27 in Klingenthal, Germany. On day one, Fletcher jumped to 15th then skied his way to a sixth-place finish with a time of 24:07.8. On the final day of competition, Fletcher jumped to seventh and dropped back one spot, skiing two penalty laps to finish eighth. Meanwhile, Billy Demong (Vermontville, N.Y.) jumped to 24th place, but skied up to a 12th- place finish.
Justin Reiter (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) closed out the FIS Snowboard World Championships with the silver medal in parallel slalom on Jan. 27 in Stoneham, Quebec. Meanwhile, Madeline Wiencke (White Bear Lake, Minn.) finished 19th and was the top U.S. female finisher.
TENNIS
Bob Bryan (Camarillo, Calif.) and Mike Bryan (Camarillo, Calif.) won their sixth Australian Open crown with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Dutchmen Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling. The win marks the twins' record 13th Grand Slam men's doubles title.
TRACK & FIELD
Duane Solomon (Lompoc, Calif.) led Team USA to a second-place finish at the Five Nations Match on Jan. 26 in Glasgow, Scotland. Solomon's time of 1:15.70 in the 600-meter race broke an American record that stood for more than 25 years.
TRIATHLON
Landen Beckner (Helena, Mont.) and Julie Zickovich (Bozeman, Mont.) raced to convincing victories at the USA Winter Triathlon Nation Championships on Jan. 27 in Butte, Mont. Beckner topped the podium in the men's competition with a time of 1:02:50, while Zickovich was the top female finisher, completing the course in 1:29.57, nearly 30 minutes clear of her closest competitor (Petra Davis, 1:58:38).
WATER POLO
The U.S. Men's National Team topped Argentina, 14-8, on Jan. 26 in Irvine, Calif. The U.S. was led by Jesse Smith (Coronado, Calif.), who netted three goals, while Andy Stevens (Villa Park, Calif.) recorded nine saves.
WRESTLING
Keith Gavin (Columbus, Ohio) went 1-1 in the men's 84 kg./185 lbs. division at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix on Jan. 27 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Gavin earned a 3-1, 1-0 victory over Tsingel Ebaya of China before falling, 0-1, 2-5, to Soslan Ktsoev of Russia.
Joe Betterman (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the U.S. at the Jack Pinto Cup, going a perfect 4-0 in the 60 kg./132 lbs. division on Jan. 26 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The two-time World Team member was named outstanding wrestler of the event.
