Firefighters extinguished a blaze at an East Anchorage apartment building Tuesday morning, keeping the flames mostly confined to a single room, according to a fire captain at the scene.

Someone inside the two-story building at 3962 Reka Drive called 911 at about 10:30 a.m., fire department spokesman Al Tamagni said. The first firefighters to arrive saw smoke and flames and began evacuating residents, Tamagni said. They also rescued several pets, he said.

Firefighters doused the flames with water and pulled down ceiling material to prevent fire from spreading through the roof, said Capt. Jess Werner with Station 3. The fire was out by about 11 a.m.

"It didn't extend too much further than the room of origin. I believe it was a bedroom," Werner said. "Due to everybody being at work, there were only a couple people in the building at the time. We had some pets we had to rescue, though."

The pets included at least one dog, one cat and a birdcage full of birds, Werner said. Nobody reported any injuries, he said.

The fire's cause is under investigation, Werner said.
