Service-East girls, Dimond boys pick up hockey wins

Anchorage Daily News sports@adn.comFebruary 1, 2013

— Kerianne Hansen scored both goals, including the game-winner halfway through the third period, to propel Service-East to the Cook Inlet Conference girls hockey championship Friday night.

Service-East beat Dimond-West 2-1 at Ben Boeke Ice Arena to claim superiority in a season-long duel between the teams. This was their fifth meeting, and each team had won twice coming into the title game.

Hansen gave Service-East a 1-0 lead in the first period. Dimond-West's Taral Clayton tied the game with a power-play goal in the second period.

Hansen struck for her second goal with 7 minutes, 24 left in the game on a pass from Leilani Blair. It was one of only four shots on goal that period for the winners, who were outshot 18-15 by Dimond-West.

BOYS HOCKEY

Dimond 10, West 0

The Dimond Lynx bounced back from a loss the previous night by pummeling West 10-0 to capture third place in the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament.

The win makes Dimond the No. 3 seed from the CIC at next week's state tournament. West will be the No. 4 seed.

Dimond, which suffered a 2-0 upset at the hands of Service in Thursday's semifinals, shot the puck with nearly pinpoint accuracy. All three of its first-period shots on goal found the net, as did half of their 10 shots on goal in the third period.

In all, the Lynx fired 31 shots at West goaltender Joe Chekan. The Eagles fired one shot on goal in the first period and 10 for the game.

The CIC championship will be decided Saturday at Ben Boeke when South meets Service.
