Letter: Shouldn’t voters have a say on cruise ship discharge?

Published: February 5, 2013

Once again the citizens of Alaska have voted to approve an initiative into law only to have our lawmakers turn their backs on their constituents in favor of special interest groups.

Whether you approve or disapprove of the law regulating cruise ship discharge, the people of Alaska voted overwhelmingly to protect our waters in 2006. Now our lawmakers have rolled back this law with House Bill 80. Shouldn’t we the voters of Alaska have a say in this? After all isn’t that what a democracy is?
