Police defuse bomb inside Madrid cathedral

— Spanish police on Thursday defused a homemade bomb found inside Madrid's most important church.

The bomb, comprising 200 grams of gunpowder and a kilogram of screws, was found inside the Almudena Cathedral, near the royal palace.

The church was evacuated, and police defused the bomb. The incident caused no injuries.

Police said the bomb was weak and roughly made. Its origin was being investigated.

The Almudena Cathedral is the seat of the Madrid archdiocese. It set the stage for the wedding of Crown Prince Felipe and journalist Letizia Ortiz in 2004.
