Our View and Your View: Ed board applicants excellent

February 7, 2013

Our invitation for guest editorial board members to discuss, debate and write with us for a four- to six-month stretch drew a wonderful response.

Eighty applicants met the Jan. 31 deadline. Most of the applications are thoughtful, appealing and reflect a wealth of intelligence, experience and knowledge from many walks of life. They range in age from 20 to 80, run the political spectrum, include varying styles and approaches to the job, and a healthy Alaska mix of strong convictions and willingness to listen and learn.

We didn't know exactly what to expect when we made the invitations, but we didn't expect such a huge and impressive response.

The present world of discourse is full of rants and raves, special interest ax grinding and more spin than a laundromat. We asked for something better, and judging from the applications, dozens of you are ready to deliver.

Apart from gratitude and delight, two consequences of this strong field are that we've decided to choose four guest board members instead of two. And we need more time to make the selections, because the competition is so stiff.

We had hoped to make the choice at the end of this week, but now it's more likely we'll take until the last weekend in February -- but absolutely before the start of the Iditarod. So we apologize for the delay and ask for your patience as we carefully consider the field.

Thanks again.
