House passes bill striking 'mentally retarded'

Published: February 8, 2013 Updated 7 hours ago

— The Alaska House has unanimously passed legislation that would change terms like "mentally retarded" in state laws.

HB88 passed 34-0. It now goes to the Senate.

Supporters of the change say the term has been used to degrade or insult people with intellectual disabilities.

The measure, from Anchorage Rep. Charisse Millett, would replace "mentally retarded" and "mental retardation" with terms such as "intellectual and developmental disabilities."
