The Alaska Department of Fish and Game hosted about 2,000 students for ice fishing at Jewel Lake this week. Jay Baumer, who runs aquatic education programs for Fish and Game, said he hoped to encourage young people to get outside and fish in winter as well as summer. Fish and Game stocked the lake with 5,000 king salmon for this event. As of midday Friday, students had retained about 1,400 of them. Ice fishing will continue Saturday and Sunday at Jewel Lake as the Alaska Sport Fishing Association hosts the Ice Fishing Jamboree. Bait and fishing poles are provided at the event which is open to the public. Fishing licenses are required for fishermen and women over the age of 16.
