Letter: ‘Gun show loophole’ is not about gun shows

Published: February 9, 2013

The so-called “gun show loophole” has nothing to do with gun shows.  Those with federal firearm licenses (FFL) are required to perform a Federal Background Check with every gun sale.  Those without FFL licenses are private owners of guns like you and me.

So what are people saying?   Those who are  private owners of guns should not be able to sell their guns without going to a FFL proxy and paying that FFL proxy to perform the background check for us?  We certainly cannot do it ourselves.

Here is the kicker, though: How are they going to ensure compliance with the law?  You cannot enforce the law unless you know who owned the gun and can trace its ownership.   How do you do that?   Two words: gun registration!  This is all about the registration of every single privately owned firearm in this country.  That is what they want for us.  I renewed my NRA membership, have you?
