Letter: Easing tax burden won’t push oil industry to boost production

Published: February 13, 2013

To all members of the Alaska Senate and House of Representatives:

Please do not vote for any oil tax legislation that reduces taxes on current or even recent production levels. It’s a giveaway.

Set a benchmark. And only consider modest, if any, tax reductions on oil produced over and above a target volume. We, the average voter, and especially those of us faced with motivating our kids, know how to incentivize improved future behavior. We are not stupid. You don’t do it by reducing requirements for current behavior.
