Anchorage — Sarah Powell and Barren Cabana celebrated with Valentine's Day victory chocolates Thursday at the Alyeska Cup after each posted wins in the U18 division of the state championship super-G at Alyeska Ski Resort.
Powell took first in the girls U18 division with a run of 1 minute 26.72 seconds, and Cabana won the boys U18 division in 1:23.08.
Less than a second behind Powell was runner-up Sarah Lundgren at 1:27.48. The boys' race was also close, with Nicholas Crews taking second at 1:23.65, about a half second behind Cabana.
Falling snow hampered visibility and caused the ski patrol to close the bowl at mid-afternoon, canceling the second of two scheduled runs. The tough conditions caused seven of 23 girls to not finish their run and led to a dramatic crash by Lars Evanger in the boys U18 event.
The five-day series continues Friday with a slalom at 11:30 a.m.
