ALPINE SKIING

Bjerka, Crews, share slalom honors

UAA's Ida Steien Bjerka and Alyeska Ski Club's Nick Crews won Friday's Alyeska Cup slalom going away.

Bjerka, a college senior and experienced Norwegian racer, posted a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 42.74 seconds to win by more than nine seconds with a display of fast, precise skiing at Alyeska Ski Resort. Second in the girls race was U18 Sarah Powell (1:51.94) and third was U16 Margo Lane (1:52.98).

Crews, whose laid-back technique hides the speed he generates, won the boys race by more than four seconds with 1:47.04. Tim Thornley was second at 1:51.43 and Clayton Wade clocked 2:03.45 to take third. Light snow that fell throughout the race did not affect the field, but recent snowfalls concealed the usually firm surface of the race trail and kept course workers busy shoveling and slipping out ruts.
