Powell, Cabana rule slopes

Sarah Powell and Barren Cabana of the Alyeska Ski Club captured giant slalom state championships Snunday in the Alyeska Cup race series at Alyeska Ski Resort.

Eighty-eight racers negotiated, or tried to negotiate, the firm and steep Steilhung pitch. Many had problems -- of the 42 girls who started, 10 did not finish or were disqualified; among the boys, 25 did not finish or were disqualified.

But Powell and Cabana had no significant problems, nor did their closest challengers. Second-place Sarah Lundgren had the fastest second run and ended up only .27 seconds behind Powell. Third was Ashlee Weller, who had a dynamite first run.

Cabana won both of the boys' runs, but second-pace Nick Crews kept it close, finishing .54 back. Tim Thornley was third, a second behind Crews.

The Alyeska Cup race series, a qualifier for the U16 and U18 championships, concludes Monday with another giant slalom.
