Weller, Thornley win Alyeska giant slaloms

AnchorageFebruary 18, 2013

Practice made perfect for Ashlee Weller at Monday's Alyeska Cup.

A U16 skier, Weller made good use of her experience Sunday, when she finished third in a giant slalom race after a blazing first run. On Monday, she laid down the fastest times in both giant slalom runs to win the final race of the Alyeska Cup series.

Weller was .54 seconds ahead of second-place Sarah Lundgren. Sarah Powell, Sunday's winner, was third, another .68 back. Lundgren and Powell are both U18 skiers.

Tim Thornley won the men's race. Barren Cabana, third after the first run, posted the fastest time on the second run to move into second overall, .72 behind Thornley.

Nick Crews was third, 1.13 seconds behind Cabana. Kiefer Davis was second after the first run, but faltered on the second and finished fourth.

The Alyeska Cup served as a qualifier for U16 and U18 regional age-group competitions and crowned state champions in three events -- super-G, giant slalom and slalom.

Alyeska Ski Resort will host the U16 regional championships beginning March 19 and will host the state downhill championship on March 25.
