Market Fresh: Panhandle salmon and crab arrive in Anchorage stores

Get a taste of Southeast Alaska this week.

The panhandle waters are producing some nice seafood options, says Dannon Southall of 10th & M Seafoods in Anchorage.

"The weather has not been very good on the trolling ground for winter kings last week and over the weekend," he says. "The weather laid down late Sunday and the guys were able to go fishing Monday and caught a few. We will have fresh trolls (Wednesday) morning with a few whites mixed in."

In addition to those fresh winter kings, fresh crab is also being harvested down south.

Southall says the fresh Bairdi crab sections are averaging about ¾ pound per cluster and are going for $13.95 per pound. "These are a great treat for this time of year," he says. "It is a short fishery, so this would be the week to take advantage of fresh crab in February."

Also out of Southeast are fresh side stripe shrimp for $10.95 per pound.

"It seems like Southeast is the hotbed for Alaskan seafood this time of year," Southall says.

Other Alaska seafood options include cod, rockfish and sole fillets available for $5.50 per pound and $9.95 per pound. Southall says exotic species coming in mid-week include fresh mahi mahi and tuna.

 

Center Market

The Center Market at The Mall at Sears continues to be the place to procure some Alaska produce and other items.

"Thanks to all of you who have been coming to the market," says Alex Davis of AD Farm. "We will continue to wash the veggies as fast as we can so that you can eat the carrots, potatoes, beets, cabbage, and parsnips while they are still good. Besides eating them, the easiest way to know that the carrots are still sweet is to wash them for you on Tuesday and smell the carroty sweetness and goodness."

Davis will have all his aforementioned produce, along with about 70 dozen duck and chicken eggs, pork products (chops, roast, loin roast, steak, breakfast sausage patties, Italian sausage, spicy sausage, ground pork, fresh side-sliced and slab), and barley flour and cereal from Delta.

Duane Clark of Country Health foods will be back with a full lineup of grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and duck, Gulf of Alaska shrimp and scallops, Alaska honey, Alaska-grown sprouts, mushrooms and goat cheese.

Earthworks Farm will have bee's wax and honey lotions, while the Rempel Family Farm will have its regular items including stripetti squash, sugar pumpkins, beets, snow apple turnips, daikon radish, green cabbage and nine kinds of potatoes.

The Center Market is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Dahlias coming soon

Rob Wells, The Persistent Farmer, will begin distributing dahlia tubers March 6 at the Center Market for those who have pre-ordered. He will have extra dahlias with him for those who have not ordered in advance.

He also will have tubers March 9 at the Alaska Botanical Garden Conference.
