Boys basketball

Grace 69, Houston 58

Grace Christian's Hans Karlberg drained five 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 21 points Tuesday, and the Grizzlies rolled to a 69-58 win over visiting Houston in a boys high school basketball game.

Karlberg made three treys in the first quarter, helping Grace race to a 23-7 lead heading into the second frame. Eric Johnson racked 17 for Grace and Kyle Markel hit for 12.

Houston's Matt Barron led all scorers with 24 points, hitting three 3-pointers along the way.

Houston 48, Grace 31

Nene Hale pumped in 12 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter Tuesday, leading visiting Houston to a 48-31 win over Grace Christian in a girls high school basketball game.

Savannah Wells added 10 points for a Houston team that led 27-14 at halftime and closed with a 16-7 fourth-quarter run.

Mikayla Shamburger notched nine points for Grace, with Liz Viergutz chipping in seven.

volleyball

Alaskans go 6-2

An Alaska Volleyball Association U17 team, made up of high school volleyball players from six different schools, made a strong showing in last weekend's Las Vegas Volleyball Classic.

Starting as the 138th seed of 168 teams, the AVA team finished with a 6-2 record and improved its ranking to 97th by the close of the three-day tournament.

Players from Eagle River, Chugiak, Colony, Dimond, Kodiak and Palmer combined efforts to beat a pair of teams from California in Monday's final matches.

NLSC dominates

The Northern Lights Swim Club swept the Senior Region XIV Great Alaska Open swim meet in Kenai last weekend, capturing boys and girls team titles.

The event featured some of the fastest high school swimmers from across the state. Clubs from Fairbanks, Naknek, Wasilla, Palmer, Kodiak, Anchorage, Soldotna, Kenai, North Pole, Seward and Homer were represented.
