Wine of the week: Haystack Needle's The Eye

February 21, 2013

Bob and Lauren Bullock are chasing their dream, a family-owned, dirt to bottle, artisanal-quality winery called Haystack Needle. One of their wines, The Eye, is my go-to beverage when I want a good stout red. It's a blend of Red Mountain and Columbia Valley Merlot, Cabernet, Malbec and Syrah. The nose is black-fruited, deep and carries menthol notes I find in more expensive Cabernet. The mouth is medium-bodied with penetrating fruit and a lovely tannic grip. Great length and finish. Costs about $15.
