Rink Roundup: Wrenn gets first AHL point, fight

Posted on February 22, 2013

Erstwhile Alaska Aces rookie defenseman William Wrenn enjoyed an eventful evening tonight, getting in his first AHL fight -- and just his second as a pro -- and notching his first AHL, which proved a pivotal one.

Skating in his second game for the Texas Stars, Wrenn fought Lake Erie winger Matt Tassone -- Aces fans may remember Tassone from Idaho and Ontario -- in the third period, when Texas trailed 3-1 on the road. Texas pulled within one goal soon after the scrap, and with just 66 seconds left in regulation, Wrenn assisted on Jamie Oleksiak's game-tying, extra-attacker goal.

The Stars won 4-3 in a shootout.

The fight was just the second of Wrenn's pro career. In his only ECHL fight, he dropped Stockton defenseman Teigan Zahn with one punch.

This is Wrenn's second promotion to the AHL. Earlier this season, he played three games for Worcester.

On the ECHL front, former Aces center Ryan Cruthers scored short-handed for Orlando tonight in a 4-2 win over visiting Gwinnett, and that marked his 20th goal this season. That gives him 20-goal campaigns in four of his five pro seasons.

In early (read: several time zones away) college action, winger Austin Wuthrich of Anchorage racked the game-tying goal midway through the third period to help Notre Dame get a 3-3 tie at Western Michigan. Notre Dame goaltender Steve Summerhays of Anchorage made 22 saves.
