Letter: Give voucher system a chance

Published: February 26, 2013

Separation of state and religion has been the facade teachers unions have used for years in order to hoard public money for their own benefit. It has to come to an end.

The American educational system has been in trouble for decades. Our country is now 21st in the world in science and 25th in math. Two thirds of our 4th graders are unable to read proficiently, and 7,000 kids drop out of school daily.

Alaskans now have an opportunity to join other states in improving the education of our children. The voucher system is just one idea, and it isn’t perfect — but it’s a start. People should be supporting the Legislature in their attempt to make education more innovative and relevant for our youth. The insane notion that the system just needs more money to make it better has run its course.
