Knight, Smith win Tour of Anchorage 50-Ks

AnchorageMarch 3, 2013

Runner-up three years ago and the third-place finisher last year, Brent Knight of Anchorage on Sunday won the big one - he captured the men's 50-kilometer title in the Tour of Anchorage, a prestigious nordic ski race that attracts Alaska's best.

Knight clocked 2 hours, 4 minutes, 41.8 seconds in the 31-mile race from Service High to Kincaid Park along city trails, much of it on the Chester and Coastal trails.

Knight seized a 42-second victory over 2011 race champion Dylan Watts (2:05:23.9), who was also runner-up a year ago. Eric Strabel finished third in 2:05:25.8.

Aubrey Smith earned the women's 50-K title in 2:30:24 to top Raphaela Sieber (2:33:07) by nearly three minutes. Melissa Lewis finished third in 2:34:14.

The Tour of Anchorage, a staple on the ski scene since 1988, in recent editions has averaged between 1,600 and 1,700 skiers, who compete at 50-K, 40-K and 25-K, with the latter distance including both freestyle and classic techniques.

Kinsey Loan won the women's 40-K in 1:57:44 and John Farr took the men's win at that distance in 1:43:44 for a four-second margin over Jonathan Koenig.

Cara McCulloch claimed the women's 25-K freestyle title in 1:17:28 and Eli Shayer took the men's title in 1:00:12.

The women's 25-K classic race was won by a blast from the past - Nancy Pease is best known for her multiple victories and longstanding course records at Mount Marathon and Crow Pass, two of the most prestigious off-road running races in Alaska.

Pease won Sunday in 1:39:05 to prove she's still got game. Consider that she won the 50-K in 1989, the second year of the Tour, and won the 25-K in 1990. A mere 24 years after her initial Tour victory, she racked her third title.

Henry Loeffler won the men's 25-K classical event in 1:19.31.
