UAA loses dual

Freshman M'rcy Matsunami led UAA gymnasts with a 38.750 all-around score, but the Seawolves lost a dual meet with host Central Michigan on Thursday.

UAA posted 191.775 points to Central Michigan’s 195.725. The 26th-ranked Chippewas  were led by Brittany Petzold’s winning all-around score of 39.125. 

UAA's Morgan Cook performed well in three events, posting a 9.725 on both the vault and beam and earning a 9.7 on the floor exercise. The Seawolves surpassed 48 combined points on the floor exercise for the first time this season, netting 48.050. Matsunami helped with a career-high tying 9.725. Simone Penker scored a 9.625, and Nicole Wetzel recorded a 9.5.

Emily Petersen's 9.8 on beam was the highest score for UAA in an individual event. It was Petersen's seventh career score of 9.8 or better.

UAA's road trip continues Saturday at Eastern Michigan's Eagle Invitational, where Kent State and Air Force will also compete.



  KARATE

Young takes gold

Anchorage's Michael Young won a gold medal at last weekend's Arizona Karate Championships in Phoenix.

Young, 47, won the 35-and-older black belt Kumite fighting division at Grand Canyon University, where Anchorage's Giuliano Belluomi, 21, nailed down a fourth-place finish in the black belt Kumite fighting division for age 18 and up.

Young and Belluomi both qualified for the USA National Karate-do Federation's Olympic qualifier event, A July tournament in Greenville, S.C.
