US women split 2 matches
The Team USA rink that includes Jessica Schultz of Anchorage split a pair Tuesday at the World Women's Curling Championships and is tied for fourth place with two days of round-robin play remaining in Riga, Latvia.
The Americans beat Japan 10-3 to rebound from a 7-6 loss to Switzerland earlier in the day.
Team USA, led by veteran skip Erika Brown, is 4-3, which puts it in a four-way tie for fourth place in the 12-team tournament. The Americans on Wednesday play Latvia (0-7) and China (2-5), and close round-robin competition Thursday with games against Scotland (6-1) and Russia (5-2).
The top four finishers in round-robin play advance to the playoffs.
Scotland and Sweden are tied for first place at 6-1, Russia sits third at 5-2, and Switzerland, Team USA, Canada and Japan are all tied for fourth at 4-3.
Alaskans 4-2 at mixed nationals
A curling rink with Ryan Flippo of Fairbanks as its skip is 4-3 through play Tuesday in the 2013 Mixed National Championships in Willmar, Minn.
Flippo's team also includes Quinn Evenson of Fairbanks and sits fourth out of 10 teams in the event.
Mancari wins Tour event
Rosie Mancari of Anchorage, coming back from a serious knee injury last season, won the women's BorderX event Monday in the Revolution Tour event in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Allison Stassel of Anchorage finished 10th.
GIRLS PREP SOCCER
Chugiak 3, West 1
Holly Brehmer notched two goals and Janissa Arzy added a solo strike Tuesday to propel Chugiak to a 3-1 Cook Inlet Conference girls soccer win at The Dome in the opener for both clubs.
Jessi Beverlin furnished an assist for Chugiak.
West's boys beat Chugiak 5-1.
BOYS PREP SOCCER
Service 5, Bartlett 0
Underclassmen ruled the pitch Monday at The Dome.
Getting two goals apiece from sophomores John Anebom and Johnny Yoon, the Service boys soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over Bartlett to open the CIC season.
Freshman Fischer Rogers added a goal for the Cougars, freshman Brady Graff dished two assists and freshman Derek Sevcik factored in another.
Freshman goalkeeper Caleb Vanblankenstein earned a shutout.
In girls action, Service beat Bartlett 11-0.
