Wisconsin chased Minnesota State-Mankato freshman goaltender Stephon Williams of Fairbanks in the second period today in a 7-2 hammering of the Mavericks at the WCHA Final Five in St. Paul, Minn. (UPDATE: Williams left the game with an upper-body injury, according to the Mankato Free Press. Also looks like Mankato senior Eli Zuck of Anchorage, who is just back from injury, had to be helped off the ice later in the game).
The Badgers racked five goals on 19 shots on the league's first-team goaltender and Rookie of the Year to advance to a semifinal Friday against top-seeded St. Cloud State, which bounced UAA in two games in the first round.
Jefferson Dahl scored two shorties for Wisconsin, Tyler Barnes added two goals and a helper, and Joel Rumpel stopped 38 shots.
The victory moved the Badgers from a tie for 16th place in the Pairwise Rankings -- those rankings mimic the formula used to determine the 16-team NCAA field -- into 16th place alone. The Mavericks, meanwhile, fell from a tie for ninth in the Pairwise to 12th.
