Alaskans lift Notre Dame to CCHA playoff title

Alaskans played a big role today in Notre Dame's CCHA playoff title, which the Irish earned with a 3-1 win over Michigan in Detroit to gain an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

Winger Austin Wuthrich potted the game-winning goal in the opening minute of the third period -- off a helper from Fairbanks-born Mario Lucia -- and Steve Summerhays stopped 20 shots.

The 16-team NCAA field will be revealed today, and USCHO.com, which usually nails these things, predicts there will be six WCHA teams -- St. Cloud State, Minnesota, North Dakota, Minnesota State-Mankato, Wisconsin and Denver. USCHO.com further predicts three Hockey East teams (Boston College, UMass-Lowell and New Hampshire), three ECAC teams (Quinnipiac, Union and Yale)  two Atlantic Hockey clubs Niagara and Canisius) and two CCHA teams (Notre Dame and Miami (Ohio).
