St. Cloud State, co-champ of the WCHA in the regular season, dispatched Notre Dame today, 5-1, in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, ending the season for Alaska connections on the Irish. Notre Dame's loss at the Midwest Regional in Toledo, Ohio, made it the second No. 1 seed to fall in an opener -- Minnesota lost to Yale on Friday, 3-2 in overtime, in the West Regional in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Notre Dame goaltender Steve Summerhays of Anchorage, who enjoyed a strong season, was pulled after surrendering four goals on 18 shots in the first two periods. Notre Dame winger Austin Wuthrich of Anchorage had an even rating and Fairbanks-born Mario Lucia was -2.

St. Cloud's win makes the WCHA 2-3 in the tournament so far.

The Huskies got two goals and a helper out of Joey Benik.
