Ontario treats Utah harshly in Kelly Cup opener

The ECHL's Kelly Cup playoffs opened in California tonight, where the Ontario Reign turned the playoff debut of Utah Grizzlies goaltender Ben Meisner into a cameo appearance.

The Reign blistered Meisner for three goals in a span of 1:50 and sent him packing in favor of former Aces masked man Shane Owen just 6:13 into the game the Reign won 5-2.

Ontario's top line of C.J. Stetch (one goal), Derek Couture (three apples) and Kyle Kraemer (two goals, two helpers) torched the Grizzlies for eight points, a combined +8 and a combined 15 shots on goal. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Utah had just 19 shots as a team -- Ontario outshot Utah 40-19 before a friends and family gathering of 2,834 at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Um, yeah, so Tuesday isn't the greatest night to open the postseason, but this series started early, no doubt, due to rink availability issues.

In any event, former Aces defenseman Nick Tuzzolini did have an assist and an even rating for Utah.
