Wine of the week: 2010 St. Hallett Gamekeeper's

April 4, 2013

St. Hallett's blend of 61 percent shiraz, 32 percent grenache and 7 percent touriga is perfect with Alaska's wild game. In fact, they even call it Gamekeeper's. The cool thing here is the addition of Touriga Nacional -- many never get to try it. It is usually blended into ports, where it is one of the main, if not best, components. I love the sultry dark fruits and mild tannic grip. The shiraz and grenache provide contrast to the Touriga's deeper personality. Serve with game of course, but rich cuts of beef will do. Costs about $16.
