— Skiers can look forward to a new high-speed detachable quad chair lift next winter at Alyeska Ski Resort.

The new Chair 6, at an estimated cost of $6 million, will be constructed and installed this summer by Doppelmayr USA Inc., between May 6 and Oct., 31.

The current Chair 6 was installed in 1988 and is one of the busiest at Alyeska Ski Resort, providing access to upper-mountain trails where popular runs like Christmas Chute, North Face, Silvertip, Trapline, Mighty Mite and High Traverse await skiers and snowboarders.

The new chairlift will be nearly identical to Ted's Express, a high-speed quad installed last summer to replace the old Chair 4.

Installing a new lift means the ski slopes will be closed in May, with certain areas of the mountain closed to hikers and bikers during the summer season. Updates on closures can be found on Alyeska's Ski-Snow hotline at 754-7669 or at alyeskaresort.com. Changes will take place daily, so resort guests are encouraged to check for updates before visiting the mountain.
