PALMER — An original Matanuska Colony farmhouse has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Campbell House, just south of Palmer, joins 15 other Colony properties on the register. State Historic Preservation Officer Judy Bittner says in a release that its a rare example of an intact frame-built home from the Colony period that has historical and physical integrity.
George and Onabelle Campbell of Michigan drew Lot 54 in the lottery for colonists for farm sites. They moved into the house in 1935 but left the colony after one winter.
William and Lulubelle Bouwens and eight of their 11 children moved to the farm in 1938 after fire destroyed their house on Lot 53.
The Bouwens family recently sold the Campbell House to Darrin and Sheri Hamming.
