UAA TRACK AND FIELD
Tanui sets record

UAA junior Susan Tanui posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time in a women's 10,000-meter race Thursday, breaking a school record in the process during the first day of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Tanui, of Kenya, automatically qualified for next month's NCAA Division II outdoor championships when she clocked 34 minutes, 19.08 seconds in the 10,000 meters, breaking the old UAA record of 34:30.53 held by teammate Ruth Keino. Tanui took sixth place in her heat.

Tanui also owns an automatic qualifying time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and a provisional time in the 1,500 meters.

Four UAA runners competed in the 1,500 meters Thursday. Ivy O'Guinn posted 4:27.77, Susan Bick finished in 4:39.26, Jessica Pahkala clocked 4:40.95 for the women's team. Isaac Kangogo represented the UAA men in 3:53.07.

UAA's Katie Krehlik completed the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:36.74, and Bryn Haebe crossed in 11:40.97.

GIRLS SOCCER
South 2, Chugiak 2

South and Chugiak played to a 2-2 draw Thursday in a Cook Inlet Conference girls soccer match at The Dome.

South struck first and held for a 1-0 halftime lead, but Chugiak's Tristyn Hall scored an equalizer on an assist from Megan Bear early in the second half.

Chugiak was issued a red card with around 10 minutes left in the match, leaving the Mustangs down a player for the remainder of the match. South capitalized with a goal on a penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead, and Chugiak's Janissa Arzie notched the match's final goal on a free kick in the 37th minute.
