Hmong performance artist Katie Ka Vang of Providence, R.I. works with sixth graders Tuesday morning April 23, 2013 at Begich Middle School. While conducting a writing workshop for English Language Learner students who primarily speak English as a second language, Vang introduced the concept of physical movement as another means of expression. Vang will also share her own story in "Bollywood" format at a school assembly Wednesday. Her one-woman show "Hmong Bollywood," runs April 25-27 at Out North. "Her workshop was designed to inspire students to tell their own story," said principal Jeanne Fischer. "In keeping with our ’Character Takes Courage’ theme for this year, it is important for students to learn to have the courage to share their story. Hmong writers and performers are underrepresented in our schools. Having a national performer as a guest is really special."
