More than 600 athletes from across Alaska are in town to compete in the 43rd annual Native Youth Olympics, which celebrates the state's diversity while highlighting competitions like the kneel jump, wrist carry, Eskimo stick pull, toe kick, two-foot and one-foot high kick and more. The games got under way last Thursday, but the action continues 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Saturday at Dena'ina Center. Admission is free.
Best of the fest
Held annually in California, the Monterey Jazz Festival is one of the longest running of its kind in the world, and the organizers are taking the show on the road with the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour. The touring band features Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, Benny Green, Lewis Nash, Chris Potter and Ambrose Akinmusire, and performs 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Atwood Concert Hall, $28-$48. Three for one
Local indie-pop bands Smile Ease, Shy Bones and Dabarko embarked on a fundraiser at indiegogo.com to release a three-way split EP that features two songs from each band, and the CD bearing the fruits of their labor will be available at the EP release show Saturday, 9 p.m. at S Lounge, $5.
