Todd Akin: 'I still regret my rape comments'

Kansas City StarApril 26, 2013

Former Missouri Congressman Todd Akin broke his post-election silence Thursday, telling a St. Louis TV station that he regrets his “legitimate rape” remarks that boosted the candidacy of Democrat Claire McCaskill.

He also said he can’t rule out another run for public office.

“It’s one of those things that depends on the circumstances really,” he told KSDK. “I don’t rule anything out.”

Akin said he would “of course” walk back his “legitimate rape” remark that drew nationwide attention and a sparked a short-lived, but deadly serious, push to get him out of the race last summer.

"I’ve relived them too many times,” Akin said. “All of us are fallible. We make mistakes, and we say things the wrong way.”

The consensus among political insiders is clear: Akin should find another line of work outside of politics.
