Letter: In wake of tax change, nation will watch how oil companies respond

April 27, 2013

Alaskan politicians have responded to the case made by the oil industry that the tax structure in Alaska was not competitive when compared to other parts of the country taking into consideration the remoteness and extreme climate that the resources are located in.

The tax structure has been reduced in a very significant manner, and I’m sure the producers realize that how they respond to this change will be watched by politicians from every other oil and gas producing state in the nation!

The spotlight is on them and they can ill afford not to respond in a significant manner. So, in addition to the increased profitability Alaska now offers, the likelihood of tax reductions elsewhere is at stake and that’s why I believe Alaska’s economy has an increasingly bright future.
