Anchorage — When it’s springtime in Alaska, sometimes you get out of school for half a day to play soccer.
The rescheduling season remained in full swing Tuesday in Anchorage, where lingering snow continued to keep spring sports teams either indoors or sidelined — and continued to keep administrators busy revamping schedules on nearly a daily basis.
While baseball teams and softball teams remained idle — both sports are a little more than four weeks away from the state tournament, and not a single game has been played yet — soccer is making do by making the most of The Dome.
On Wednesday, six matches will be played indoors at The Dome, all during the day. The first match begins at 7:30 a.m. and the last is due to start at 3:30 p.m.
Students playing in morning games will be expected to return to school in the afternoon, according to the Anchorage School District. Students playing in afternoon games must go to morning classes first.
Four more games will be played at The Dome on Thursday, the first beginning at 12:30 p.m. and the last at 6:30 p.m. That night, the first outdoors games are scheduled to be played at Clark Middle School.
Friday’s revamped schedule puts four games at The Dome, from 2:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., and two at Clark.
Saturday’s schedule will be determined later.
Though junior varsity and C soccer teams have been hurt the most by unplayable fields — varsity teams get preference when it comes to filling openings at The Dome — a couple of them will catch a break this week. Juneau is coming to town for a handful of varsity matches and will bring its JV team too, so a few of the games at The Dome and Clark will involved JV and C teams.
Meanwhile, the softball season is scheduled to open Wednesday with games at Albrecht and the Knik field in Eagle River. Baseball organizers are planning for a Thursday season-opener at Mulcahy Stadium.
