Letter: Real gun problem needs attention

May 2, 2013

If the goal is to keep guns out of the hands of those individuals who are considered too dangerous to own a gun, then how is increasing the number of background checks and making “assault weapons” illegal going to achieve that goal? All that is going to do is pile more laws on top of the ones that are currently not working.

Congress needs to focus on the fundamental problem with guns, and that is keeping them out of the hands of mentally unstable people. How do we do that? I don’t know. But if our Congress could pass a law that would address that issue they would reduce the number of deaths caused by guns. That would be a real accomplishment, and would make us safer. It should be clear to everyone by now that more background checks and banning more weapons isn’t going to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them.

Congress did the right thing in defeating the latest legislative effort. Maybe now they can focus their debate on the real problem.
