Anchorage's Mackie selected in USHL draft

Winger Gage Mackie of Anchorage on Monday was selected by the Fargo Force in the U.S. Hockey League draft of players with 1997 birthdays.

The Force took Mackie, 15, in the eighth and final round to secure his USHL rights.

Mackie, 15, played this past season at Shattuck-St. Mary's, an elite program in Faribault, Minn.

Mackie, a sophomore, was fourth on his midget AA team in goals and earned 18-21--39 totals in 46 games.

He'll likely play two more years at Shattuck, which has produced a slew of NHLers and has developed many Alaska players, before heading to the USHL, which develops a slew of college players and is widely considered the best junior league in the country.
