Al Aska Shriners’ Annual Onion Sales Fundraiser Kicks Off this Week
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A ceremony will be held Tuesday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m. at the Al Aska Shrine Center in Anchorage to honor five local businesses for supporting the annual Al Aska Shriners Vidalia Onion sale, which will kick off immediately following the event.
For more than 25 years, the Al Aska Shriners have been bringing the world famous Vidalia Onions to Alaskans. They will honor American Fast Freight, DJ’s Alaska Rentals, Lynden Transport, Totem Ocean Trailer Express and Weaver Bros. with a plaque presentation to thank them for helping make the fundraiser a success each year. With more than 33,000 pounds of Vidalia Onions and a wide assortment of unique condiments for sale, items frequently sell out in less than five days.
The Vidalia onion is a sweet onion that was originally grown near Vidalia, Georgia in the 1930s. Today, Vidalia onions continue to grow in designated areas of Georgia where soil has a low amount of sulfur. These specific conditions result in this unusually sweet variety of onion. In addition to the onions, condiments that will be sold this year include a variety of salad dressings, salsas, relishes and hot sauces.
Al Aska Shriners will sell these items at various locations in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Seward and Kenai from May 7-15. In Anchorage, products will be available at the Alaska Shrine Center at 1930 E. Northern Lights Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily.
Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the Al Aska Shrine, an organization of nearly 800 volunteers focused on fun, fellowship and philanthropy.
