Reading Royals, with 4 former Aces, headed to Kelly Cup Finals

The Reading Royals, who include four former Alaska Aces, clinched their first trip to the ECHL's Kelly Cup Finals with tonight's 3-1 close-out of the host Cincinnati Cyclones to bag the Eastern Conference Finals in five games.

The Royals, who got 25 saves from Riley Gill, will own home-ice advantage in the Kelly Cup Finals against the winner of the Idaho-Stockton series in the Western Conference Finals.

Former Aces defenseman Patrick Wellar had an assist on Reading's game-winning goal tonight -- he's looking to hoist the Kelly Cup for a third time, having won it with the Aces in 2006 and the South Carolina Stingrays in 2009, when they beat the Aces in Game 7 at Sullivan Arena.

Former Aces center Ethan Cox and former Aces defenseman Brock Shelgren also played for the Royals tonight, as did former UAF and Aces defenseman Bryant Molle of Anchorage.
