Eagle River's Hanson in Memorial Cup semifinal

The WHL champion Portland Winterhawks advanced to Friday's semifinal in the Memorial Cup -- that's the championship of the all major-junior hockey -- with tonight's 4-2 victory over the host Saskatoon Blades of the WHL, and that means Winterhawks defenseman Josh Hanson of Eagle River is one game away from the Final.

Hanson, 19, was +2 tonight. His club gets Thursday off. Thursday's elimination game pits Saskatoon against the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. The winner of that game plays Portland on Friday for the right to gain the Final against the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Portland is 2-1 in the tournament, as are the Mooseheads, who advanced automatically to the Final because they won their head-to-heading game against the Winterhawks in the round-robin portion of the four-team tournament.
