Service 16, Chugiak 6

Service clinched a spot in the state high school baseball tournament Thursday by withstanding Chugiak's six-run first inning and taking a 16-6 win in the Cook Inlet Conference playoffs at Mulcahy Stadium.

Service's Matt Yandell turned in a big game on the mound and at the plate to lift the Cougars. He entered in relief with no outs in the first inning and allowed three hits the rest of the game, plus he cracked an RBI double to spark Service's seven-run third inning.

Lucas LaPoint was 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Cougars, who trailed 6-2 after one inning.

Chase Wilson and Kai Fugere each belted two-run singles for Chugiak in the first inning. The Mustangs had plated four runs when Yandell entered the game; he allowed two runs on one hit before getting out of the inning and then blanked the Mustangs the rest of the way.

South 15, West 0

Freshman Matt Kley pitched a complete-game shutout Thursday in the CIC playoffs at Mulcahy, leading South to a 15-0 victory over West that gives the Wolverines a shot at clinching a state tournament berth.

South faces Chugiak at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Mulcahy, with the winner joining Service at the state tournament.

Kley gave up five hits in five innings and got plenty of run support. Brad Butcher's three hits included a three-run triple and Willie Homza added two hits.

Dimond 15, East 3

Dimond scored nine runs in the first inning Thursday en route to a 15-3 CIC consolation win over East.

Sheldon Rouzan drove in four runs with two singles and a double and scored twice for the Lynx. Mahlon Cleveland tripled, doubled and singled and Bryon Lowe added two hits for Dimond, which got a five-strikeout, five-inning pitching performance from Jordan Carpenter.

East got a boost from Yeararmy Aristy-Valdez, who drove in two runs on two hits, and Matthew Schnellbaecher, who had a pair of singles.

West wins two

West won a pair of softball games Thursday at Albrecht Fields to advance to the championship game of the Cook Inlet Conference softball tournament, where the Eagles will face undefeated East.

West beat South 8-0 and Chugiak 4-2 to advance to Friday's title game at 6 p.m. The if-necessary game will follow at 7:45 p.m.

Pauline Tufi pitched and provided key hits in both games. Against South, she struck out 15 in a six-inning two hitter, while also driving in four runs with four hits, including a homer and a double. She scored three times, and Temple Vice knocked in three runs with a 2-for-3 plate effort that included a double.

West scored three times in the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh to stop Chugiak, which got both of its runs in the sixth inning.

Tufi and Lauren Syrup were both 2 for 3 for the Eagles. Rachel Gregg's solo home run sparked Chugiak.
