Congrats to the Reading Royals -- that ECHL club, rife with Alaska connections, won the Kelly Cup on Saturday night on the road with a 6-0 win at Stockton in Game 5 of the best-of-7 series.
Former Alaska Aces defenseman Patrick Wellar (0-3--3 and +3 in seven games) earned his third Kelly Cup and fourth pro title -- he won Kelly Cups with the Aces in 2006 and South Carolina in 2009 (the Stingrays beat the Aces in Game 7 at Sullivan Arena), and the AHL's Calder Cup with Hershey in 2010.
Former Aces center Ethan Cox (2-5--7 and +11 in 22 games) won his second Kelly Cup -- he helped Alaska to the 2011 Cup.
Former Aces and UAF defenseman Bryant Molle (0-1--1 and +5 in 22 games) of Anchorage lifted a Cup for the second straight season -- he won the CHL's Presidents Cup with Fort Wayne in 2012.
And former Aces defenseman Brock Shelgren (0-3--3 and +3 in 10 games) won his first Cup.
Stockton was hurt by the loss of goaltender Olivier Roy, injured early in the Thunder's 4-3 win in Game 4 Friday. The Thunder, remember, eliminated the Aces for the postseason.
