Anchorage Amazing Pet Expo

Shorty Rossi and his pit bull Hercules, star of "Pit Boss" on Animal Planet, will make a guest appearance at a free celebration of all things animal. Bring your pet for demos, low-cost vaccinations, contests and more from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at the Sullivan Arena.

David Wax Museum

A "Mexo-American" band from down south stops at Tap Root 9 p.m. Tuesday en route to the Midnight Sun Folk Festival in Nome. Their style mixes traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock. $5 for advance tickets, $7 at the door.

A Day in the Life of a Whale

Explore what life is like for whales around Alaska's coasts in a self-guided tour at the Alaska Museum of Science and Nature, 201 N. Bragaw St., 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-June 22. Museum admission is $5, $3 for children.

Spenard Jazz Fest

Two events celebrate new work this weekend. At 7 p.m. Friday, the Alaska song of the year contest winners will be presented at Organic Oasis, 2610 Spenard Road. Starting 4 p.m. Saturday, local jazz heroes will toss the cover cheat sheets aside for "originals only."

Solstice shorts

Five original short films produced in Alaska will be premiered at the Solstice Showcase, Alaska Film Forum, 10:15 p.m. Thursday at the Bear Tooth Theatre. Admission is $10, $12 for booth seating. Get your tickets in advance at the Bear Tooth box office.
