Trevor Bettencourt pitched eight scoreless innings Thursday and The Mat-Su Miners earned a 6-0 Alaska Baseball League win over the visiting Fairbanks Goldpanners at Hermon Brothers Field.

Bettencourt surrendered one hit, struck out four and walked four to pick up a first league win for himself and the Miners. The bulk of the runs came early, the Miners bolting to a 5-0 lead through two innings. A.J. Simcox scored a run in each of the first two innings. Jack Amaro and Nash Knight each doubled and scored in the third inning.

Tyler Martin relieved Bettencourt in the ninth, but Drew Smith relieved Martin to record the final three outs for the Miners.

The Goldpanners' only two hits came from Nolan Meadows and Nathan Michalski. Michael Kaufman took the loss for Fairbanks, allowing three runs before leaving in the second inning.

Oilers 6, Seals 2

In Thursday's non-league action, the Peninsula Oilers took out the San Francisco Seals 6-2 at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

Starter G.J. Strauss struck out nine over six scoreless innings for the Oilers, who built a 6-0 lead in that time. A.J. Ramirez and Mike Wieland each scored twice for the Oilers, with Turner Clouse and Taylor Tempel each driving in a pair.

Lefty Van Brunt Memorial Camp

The Lefty Van Brunt Memorial Youth Baseball and Softball Camp, which provided a week of free hitting, pitching and catching tips for boys and girls ages 7-18, is coming to a close Friday with a ceremony at Mulcahy Stadium at 11:45 a.m.

More than 50 Anchorage boys and girls will join Anchorage Glacier Pilots players and coaches at the ceremony to celebrate the Summer of Heroes scholarship program that supports youth development and is sponsored by Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Club.

Van Brunt was a longtime coach with the Pilots who died in 2011. He was known for offering tips to young players.
