Outdoor art featured at Botanical Garden gala

One of the sculptural pieces on sale at the Alaska Botanical Garden's Midsummer Gala.

The Alaska Botanical Garden's Midsummer Gala will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. There may be extra energy added to this event this year since the traditional Garden Fair has had to be cancelled due to several construction projects underway. But the gala features artwork that is usually auctioned off with a chunk of the proceeds going to benefit the garden and organizer Marieka Heatwole tells us that a number of well-known local sculptors will have 3-D garden art on sale.

Like Isolde Gibson's "Lichen Vessel," made of clay and measuring 23x17.

Gibson says, " While walking in the woods around Eagle River Visitor Center, I stumbled upon lichens I found out to belong to the Cladonia family.  Delicate funnel shaped cups growing in the shade of decaying wood reminded me of a celebration of fairies I might had interrupted just now.  I was enchanted and went to my studio to form this vessel."

Tickets for the gala are $75 and available at alaskabg.org.
