Letter: We have power to cause change

June 27, 2013

Living in Alaska, we know that living things are naturally inclined to utilize resources to promote their survival. Take, for instance, bird nests, beehives and beaver dams. We as people are living things and are not unlike other living things. We, however, do have the power to drastically change and alter our environment and surroundings. With this kind of power, there must be responsibility to complement it.

On that note, take for example the junk-mail ads and phone books that freely fill their presence everywhere. Overconsumption is proved when a tree is chopped not for survival, but something unnecessary. History will judge us by what we do in the present, and if we act now, future generations will still inherit a lush, green and blue paradise we call Earth.
