Letter: Two books on deadly fires

July 5, 2013

With respect to any interest in the wildfire tragedy in Arizona this past week, I recommend two books. “Young Men and Fire” by Norman McLean about a fire crew that was overrun and died in the ’40s  and “Fire on the Mountain: The True Story of the South Canyon Fire” by Norman’s son, John McLean. It is about a crew that also got overrun and died 30 years later under eerily similar circumstances.

I hope this latest event is not a repeat of the failures that resulted in those two earlier events.
