Rosa, Wilk strengthen their leads in handcycling race

— With two stages left in the Sadler's Alaska Challenge handcycling race, Thea Rosa seemingly owns a stranglehold on the women's division and Rafal Wilk has stretched his overall lead.

Rosa, of Cool, Calif., has won all five stages among women. Friday, the only day of the seven-stage race that includes two stages, she was the fastest woman in the morning's 10.9-mile time trial in Denali Park, clocking 42 minutes, 54 seconds, and also the fastest woman in the afternoon's 28.2-mile road race, crossing in 1:45:58.

With an unofficial overall time of 10:05:08, Rosa owns a lead of nearly 48 minutes on Carrie Finale of Pacifica, Calif.

On the men's side, Wilk, the double gold medalist at the London Paralympics, seized both Friday's time trial (29:01) and road race (1:15:08) to consolidate his overall lead, strengthening it by about two minutes. Wilk, of Poland, owns an unofficial overall time of 6:45:35, which gives him an advantage of 7:09 over Walter Ablinger of Austria, who at the London Paralympics won gold and silver.

The 267-mile stage race continues Saturday with a 49.4-mile road race that finishes in Talkeetna.

The Challenge closes Sunday in a most demanding finale -- a brutal 22.5-mile climb of Hatcher Pass, with racers gaining about 3,500 feet of elevation to the finish line at Independence Mine.

Each of the four division winners will earn $3,000. Second place in each division garners $2,000 and third place wins $1,000.
