Kodiak museum receives $35,000 grant for weaving exhibit

— The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation has awarded a $35,000 grant to Kodiak's Alutiiq Museum to create an exhibit and educational booklet about Alutiiq weaving.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports work on the exhibit is expected to start later this year.

The exhibit will combine images of basketry from a museum in St. Petersburg, Russia and local weavings.

Former museum director Sven Haakanson in 2011 took Alaska weavers to St. Petersburg to study Aleut and Alutiiq basketry.

Work produced by the Alaska weavers was given to the museum.
